The majority of stock cars travelled from the Western states to the Chicago packing houses, with the cargo continuing it's eastward journey in meat reefers. Over 40% of the United States is western range land, too dry in most cases for crops, but ideal for grazing animals. Most of the population throughout the steam-era was concentrated in the Northeast. Stock cars and meat reefers brought one to the other.
